Hyderabad experienced chaos and disruption after heavy rainfall led to kilometres-long traffic jams in central areas, Secunderabad, and key IT clusters like Madhapur and Gachibowli. The downpour, accompanied by hailstorms in some parts, provided relief from the heat but created a nightmare for commuters.
The traffic snarls extended from the Raidurgam Biodiversity junction to IKEA and various stretches along the IT corridor, leading to frustration among drivers stuck for hours. The rain also brought electricity disruptions in several areas, adding to the challenges faced by residents.
Tragically, the heavy rainfall had fatal consequences as seven individuals, including a four-year-old child, lost their lives when a retaining wall collapsed at an under-construction apartment in Bachupally due to the torrential downpour. The victims, migrant workers from Odisha and Chhattisgarh, were recovered from the debris by emergency teams.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) worked tirelessly to clear the waterlogged roads and remove fallen trees, but the traffic disruptions persisted throughout the night and into the following day.
The impact of the rain extended beyond Hyderabad, affecting districts like Karimnagar, Medak, Warangal, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, and Mulugu with thunderstorms and rainfall. This abrupt change in weather followed a period of severe heatwave conditions, with temperatures soaring above 46 degrees Celsius in some areas.
As the weather office predicts more rain and thunderstorms, residents and authorities brace for further challenges in managing the aftermath of the downpour and ensuring safety amid the changing weather conditions.
