A third-year Computer Science student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati was found dead in his hostel room, marking the fourth student death at the prestigious institute this year. The 21-year-old, originally from Uttar Pradesh, was discovered by fellow students in his room, prompting an immediate response from local authorities.
The student’s body has been sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for a postmortem examination. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, but initial reports have not yet determined the cause.
The incident has sparked significant protests among the IIT-G student community. Demonstrators are expressing frustration over what they perceive as inadequate mental health and welfare support systems at the institute. Many students are questioning the effectiveness of existing measures to address mental health issues and prevent such tragedies.
In response to the protests, an IIT-G spokesperson expressed deep sorrow over the student’s death and extended condolences to the bereaved family. “IITG is deeply saddened to report the loss of a student from our community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the student’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time,” the spokesperson said.
The institute has reiterated its commitment to ensuring a supportive and safe environment for all students. “We encourage our student community to reach out to our support networks. IITG reaffirms its commitment to fostering a supportive and safe environment for all students,” the spokesperson added.
The IIT-G administration has pledged to review its mental health and welfare support systems in light of the recent incidents. The institution remains focused on addressing the concerns raised by students and improving support mechanisms to prevent future tragedies.
