IMD Issues Red and Orange Weather Alerts for 8 Kerala Districts on December 2 Due to Heavy Rainfall

Kerala Weather: IMD Issues Red and Orange Alerts for 8 Districts Amid Heavy Rains on December 2

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange weather alerts for several districts in Kerala on Sunday, December 2, as the state braces for heavy and extremely heavy rainfall over the next few days. The warnings come amid the forecast of a significant weather disturbance, which is expected to bring intense rainfall across the region.

    Red and Orange Alerts Issued

The IMD has issued a red alert for the northern districts of Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur, where isolated heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is predicted. The alert warns of more than 20 cm of rainfall within 24 hours in these areas. The heavy rainfall is expected to continue throughout Monday and into Tuesday, with the IMD predicting light to moderate rainfall at several locations, and heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places.

Along with the red alerts, an orange alert has been issued for the districts of Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur. These areas can expect rainfall ranging from 11 to 20 cm, which could lead to localized flooding and other weather-related disruptions.

The IMD also placed a yellow alert on the districts of Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, indicating rainfall between 6 and 11 cm in these areas.

    Impact on Local Communities

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has advised residents in low-lying areas and regions prone to landslides and mudslides to relocate to safer places as a precautionary measure. People living near riverbanks and in dam catchment areas have been urged to evacuate as per the instructions of local authorities. The warning highlights the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas and riverbanks, particularly due to the combination of heavy rainfall and high water levels.

Additionally, the KSDMA has advised the regulation of traffic to prevent non-essential movement. The authority cautioned residents about possible waterlogging on major roads, reduced visibility, and traffic congestion due to the heavy rain. Strong winds and the uprooting of trees could further disrupt the power supply and cause damage to infrastructure.

    Fishing Restrictions

The IMD also issued warnings for the fishing community, advising that fishing should not take place along the Kerala coast from December 1 to 4, off the Lakshadweep coast from December 1 to 5, and off the Karnataka coast on December 3 and 4 due to rough sea conditions.

As the state prepares for the heavy rains, authorities have called for vigilance and preparedness to reduce the potential impacts of the extreme weather. Residents are encouraged to follow updates from the IMD and local authorities for the latest advisories and safety precautions.
