“IMD Warns of Heavy Rainfall in Mumbai and Nearby Regions”

Mumbai and Thane Regions Brace for Heavy Rains as IMD Issues Alert

Heavy rainfall has engulfed Mumbai and adjoining Thane regions, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a ‘yellow’ alert for the area. With the southwest monsoon progressing further, the weather department forecasts intensified showers over the next several days, urging caution among residents and fishermen alike.

Mumbai and its neighboring Thane region experienced heavy rains on Wednesday, accompanied by an IMD ‘yellow’ alert signaling expected heavy to moderate rainfall. The city’s maximum temperature is anticipated to reach 32 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is projected to drop to 25 degrees Celsius, according to IMD reports. Over the next few days, Mumbai is expected to see cloudy skies with heavy rainfall on June 27 and moderate rainfall on June 28, 29, and 30, as the monsoon advances.

As a precautionary measure, a high waves warning has been issued for the Mumbai-Thane coastal areas, advising individuals engaged in shore activities to exercise caution. Fishermen have been cautioned against venturing into the sea until June 29 due to prevailing weather conditions.

The onset of the monsoon in Mumbai on June 9 led to widespread waterlogging, disrupting normal life and causing traffic congestion in various parts of the city. In response, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde launched the ‘Zero Casualty Mission’ to mitigate risks during the monsoon period, emphasizing proactive measures to ensure public safety. The Mumbai Traffic Police have announced plans to close subways if water levels exceed half a foot, a move aimed at preventing waterlogging incidents.

Furthermore, road maintenance activities have been temporarily halted, with dedicated teams deployed to assist stranded buses. Chief Minister Shinde has instructed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to prioritize filling potholes within 24 hours of notification, underscoring efforts to enhance infrastructure resilience.

With heavy rains battering Mumbai and neighboring Thane, the city prepares for further downpours under the IMD’s alert. The government’s proactive stance, including the ‘Zero Casualty Mission’ and infrastructure maintenance initiatives, aims to minimize disruptions and ensure public safety during the monsoon season.
