Tragedy struck the Indian classical dance community as news emerged of the untimely demise of Amarnath Ghosh, a talented dancer hailing from Kolkata, India. Ghosh was shot dead in St Louis City, Missouri, while taking an evening walk, according to a statement made by his friend and television actress, Devoleena Bhattacharjee.
The shocking incident occurred when Ghosh was reportedly shot multiple times during his stroll in the St Louis academy neighborhood on Tuesday. Bhattacharjee, seeking assistance from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, lamented the loss of her friend and urged for swift action to uncover the circumstances surrounding his tragic death.
In a heartfelt plea, Bhattacharjee revealed poignant details about Ghosh’s background, highlighting his status as the only child in his family. Having lost both his parents—his mother three years prior and his father during his childhood—Ghosh’s untimely passing leaves behind a void in his family and the dance community at large.
Amarnath Ghosh was a renowned Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi dancer, known for his exceptional talent and dedication to the art form. Pursuing an MFA in Dance at Washington University in St Louis, Ghosh was a distinguished alumnus of the prestigious Kalakshetra Academy in Chennai.
A versatile performer proficient in four dance styles, Ghosh’s contributions to the field of classical dance earned him accolades and recognition. He was the recipient of a National Scholarship for Kuchipudi from the International Cultural Ministry, and he had the privilege of training under esteemed mentors such as Bobita Dey Sarkar, Sri MV Narasimhachari, and Padma Sri Adyar K Lakshman.
As the dance community mourns the loss of a promising talent, efforts are underway to claim Ghosh’s body and seek clarity regarding the circumstances of his tragic demise.
