Budget airline IndiGo has issued a formal apology to passengers aboard flight 6E 2235 from Delhi to Varanasi after an air conditioning malfunction caused significant discomfort. The incident, which occurred on September 5, 2024, led to cabin temperatures rising dramatically, resulting in distress among passengers.
IndiGo’s apology comes after numerous complaints surfaced regarding the uncomfortably high temperatures inside the aircraft. While the airline initially denied problems with the air conditioning system, stating that it was functioning properly, they acknowledged that a temperature shift led to the cabin overheating. This situation led to panic and discomfort among the passengers.
The airline’s statement addressed the issue, stating, “We extend our apologies for the inconvenience experienced on flight 6E 2235. Difficulties caused by fluctuations in cabin temperature were adjusted as per passenger requests. The cabin crew assisted all passengers until the situation improved.”
Video footage from the flight showed passengers using magazines to fan themselves, and reports indicated that some passengers fainted due to the intense heat and suffocation. The incident, which also affected elderly passengers who experienced breathing difficulties, was described by some as akin to being ‘hijacked.’
This incident follows a similar event in June, where a flight from Delhi to Bagdogra faced a malfunctioning air conditioning system, resulting in a one-hour delay. IndiGo had apologized for that incident as well, attributing it to high ground temperatures impacting operations and stressing their commitment to passenger safety.
The airline’s quick response and assistance during the situation were highlighted, but the incidents have raised concerns about the airline’s handling of temperature control and passenger comfort on board.
