ISRO Chief Diagnosed with Cancer on Day of Aditya L1 Mission Launch, Declares Full Recovery

S Somanath, the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), has disclosed that he received a cancer diagnosis on the day of India’s Aditya L1 solar mission launch. Despite the shocking revelation, Somanath declared that he is now “completely healthy” after undergoing surgery and chemotherapy.

In an interview with Tarmak Media House, Somanath recounted his journey from diagnosis to recovery. He revealed that he became aware of some health concerns during the launch of the Chandrayaan-3 mission last year, although he did not fully comprehend the extent of the issue at the time. It was during a routine scan on the day of the Aditya L1 launch that he received a clue about his condition.

Following the launch, Somanath underwent further tests in Chennai, which confirmed the presence of a cancerous growth in his large intestine. Subsequently, he underwent surgery to remove the growth, followed by a course of chemotherapy. Despite the initial uncertainty, Somanath expressed gratitude for the support and guidance he received from family members who had overcome similar challenges.

Acknowledging the shock his diagnosis must have caused to his family, Somanath emphasized the importance of viewing cancer as a treatable condition rather than an incurable disease. He admitted to moments of uncertainty during his treatment but affirmed his determination to overcome the illness.

Somanath’s commitment to his responsibilities remained unwavering even during his diagnosis and treatment period. After spending four days in the hospital for surgery, he resumed his duties and has since undergone regular check-ups to monitor his health.

Now declared completely cured, Somanath plans to undergo annual check-ups to ensure his continued well-being. He reassured that he no longer experiences any pain and is fully capable of fulfilling his duties as ISRO chairman.

Somanath’s journey serves as a testament to resilience and determination in the face of adversity. His successful battle against cancer stands as an inspiration, underscoring the message that with proper treatment and support, even daunting challenges like cancer can be overcome.
