Japanese Man in Collie Costume Clarifies Motives: Not About Living Like a Dog

A Japanese man who made headlines for donning a hyperrealistic collie costume and roaming the streets of Tokyo has set the record straight amidst online speculation that he wants to live life as a dog. Contrary to assumptions, he asserts that his choice is fueled by his admiration for animals and a desire to transform rather than an attempt to fully embody a canine lifestyle.

The viral video, which captured the man in the collie suit exploring Tokyo, triggered assumptions that he aimed to embrace the life of a dog. However, the individual, known by the moniker “Toco,” refutes these notions. While he declined to disclose his real identity, Toco maintains that his decision stems from genuine affection for animals and their world.

Toco runs a YouTube channel under the name “I Want to Be an Animal,” where he shares videos of his escapades in the city while dressed as a collie. His intention is to express his aspiration for transformation rather than a desire to mimic a dog’s existence. Addressing the controversy, he clarifies that the collie portrayal is neither sexual nor an attempt at a dog’s life.

In an interview with the New York Post, Toco elaborates on his motivations: “to be an animal is like a desire to transform…a desire to be something that I am not.” He expresses disappointment over the misconception that his decision is purely about emulating a dog’s lifestyle.

Contrary to assumptions, Toco’s family has demonstrated strong support for his unconventional choice. He notes that their reaction was favorable: “The family was surprised but received it favorably, I am very happy that they accepted it.”

The intricate collie costume, crafted by renowned company Zeppet, recognized for producing costumes for TV shows and commercials, took around 40 days to bring Toco’s vision to life. While his choice may be met with varied opinions, his YouTube channel boasts over 52,000 subscribers who engage with his content, including footage of him inside a cage, consuming dog treats, and sipping soda.

Reflecting on the response, Toco expresses gratitude, admitting, “I did not expect such a big response.” His case serves as a reminder that appearances can be misleading, and his unique transformation is driven by a desire to embrace a different identity and world rather than simply living like a dog.
