“Delays Plague Jewar Airport Project, Completion Pushed to April 2025” The Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) has reported that approximately 78.11% of the work on the Noida airport has been finished. However, due to sluggish progress on the terminal building, the completion date for the Jewar airport project has been postponed by seven months, according to officials familiar with the situation.
Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd (YIAPL), the concessionaire for the project, has revised the completion date from September 29, 2024, to April 2025, as per these officials. Delays in obtaining imported steel necessary for constructing the terminal building and related infrastructure have contributed significantly to the slowdown in progress.
NIAL has decided to enforce penalties for the project’s delay. The concession agreement allows for a grace period of 91 days, after which NIAL has the authority to levy a penalty of ₹10 lakh per day for the duration of the delay, officials mentioned.
An issue arose when YIAPL unilaterally extended the completion deadline without consulting NIAL, leading to a notice being issued to the company. Arun Vir Singh, CEO of NIAL and the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority, stated that they objected to the commencement of construction on additional components such as the airport hotel by Roseate Hotels and the cargo terminal by AISATS without government layout approval.
In response, YIAPL clarified that despite the delays, progress is being made on critical aspects like the runway, passenger terminal, control tower, and contractual agreements with airlines for flight connections. They anticipate commencing commercial operations by the end of April 2025, working closely with their contractor Tata Projects Limited and other stakeholders.
The Jewar airport project, aimed at boosting regional connectivity and economic growth, faces challenges in meeting its original timeline but remains optimistic about achieving operational readiness by the revised deadline.
