‘Judge Asked for ₹5 Lakh to Resolve Case’: Father of Bengaluru Techie Alleges

Atul Subhash, a 34-year-old deputy general manager of a private firm, was found dead in his Bengaluru apartment on December 9. Subhash’s tragic death, ruled as suicide, has sparked a debate about alleged harassment, corruption, and misuse of legal provisions.

Subhash left behind a 24-page suicide note accusing his wife and her family of filing multiple false cases against him and his family. He also alleged that a judge overseeing one of the cases demanded ₹5 lakh to settle the matter.

    Father’s Heartbreaking Allegations

Speaking to ANI, Subhash’s father, Pawan Kumar, said his son was mentally and emotionally “broken” due to the ongoing legal battles. “He used to say there is a lot of corruption, but he will fight as he is on the path of truth,” Kumar said.

Subhash’s wife allegedly began filing cases against him and his family in January 2021. According to his father, these cases targeted the entire family and caused immense mental stress.

    Accusations of Judicial Corruption

The father further alleged corruption within the legal system, claiming a judge demanded ₹5 lakh for a settlement. He detailed how initial mediation talks began with smaller sums of ₹20,000 and ₹40,000 before escalating to the alleged bribe.

    Family’s Plea for Justice

Subhash’s brother, Vikas, expressed shock over the suicide, saying the family had no warning signs. He added that false cases were also filed against him and his parents. “Action should be taken against all those who mentally tortured my brother and filed false cases,” he said.

The family revealed that Subhash had reached out to various leaders and institutions, including the President and the Supreme Court, detailing his plight. His brother urged for the establishment of forums or committees where men can seek justice.

Supreme Court’s Recent Observations on Section 498A

The incident coincides with the Supreme Court expressing concern over the misuse of Section 498A of the IPC, which addresses cruelty by husbands and their relatives. In a separate case, the court noted that the provision is often used as a tool for personal vendettas.

    Suicide Note Reveals Agonizing Details

Subhash’s suicide note reportedly contained the words “Justice is due” on every page. He accused his wife of filing nine false cases, including charges of murder, sexual misconduct, domestic violence, and dowry harassment.

    Investigation Underway

A Bengaluru police team has traveled to Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, to investigate Subhash’s in-laws. Authorities have yet to comment on the allegations of judicial corruption or the misuse of legal provisions.

Subhash’s death has ignited a broader conversation about the need for reforms in laws designed to empower women, which some claim are increasingly being misused.
