In light of the ongoing Kanwar Yatra, all schools in Ghaziabad will remain closed from July 29 to August 2. The decision, announced by District Magistrate Indra Vikram Singh, aims to ensure the safety of students and manage the increased traffic and security concerns associated with the annual pilgrimage.
The Kanwar Yatra, which began with the start of the Sawan month on July 22 and will culminate on August 2 with Shivratri, involves thousands of devotees transporting ‘holy water’ from Haridwar to various states, including Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi. The significant influx of Kanwariyas, or pilgrims, through Ghaziabad necessitated stringent measures to avoid disruptions and ensure public safety.
“Due to the increased movement of Kanwariyas and the need to secure the safety of children and school buses, all primary and secondary schools in Ghaziabad, including CBSE and ICSE schools, will be closed during this period,” said DM Singh.
To further mitigate risks, officials have imposed a complete ban on small and light vehicles in the area. This measure is intended to manage traffic congestion and ensure the smooth passage of the large number of devotees participating in the Yatra.
Security has been tightened across the district, particularly following an incident in Muradnagar where a car allegedly struck some Kanwariyas. The resulting altercation led to damage to the vehicle and the creation of a traffic jam on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. In response, Ghaziabad Police have deployed two companies of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) at the Ganga canal bridge and other key locations to enhance security and maintain order.
Ghaziabad Commissioner of Police Ajay Kumar Mishra emphasized that the closure of schools and restriction on vehicle movement is a precautionary step to address the anticipated surge in Kanwariyas and avoid further incidents.
The Kanwar Yatra will conclude with Sawan Shivratri on August 2, a day when Kanwariyas will perform ‘jalabhishek’ (offering of holy water) to Lord Shiva. The closure of schools and heightened security are measures to ensure that this religious event proceeds safely and without major disruptions.
