“Karnataka Expands Egg Supply in School Meals to Six Days a Week for Government and Aided Schools”

Karnataka has announced an upgrade to its midday meal scheme, ensuring that students in government and government-aided schools will now receive eggs six days a week. This significant change comes as a result of a new agreement signed between the Karnataka government and the Azim Premji Foundation.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), finalized on Saturday, aims to enhance the nutritional value of the state’s midday meal program over the next three years. Previously, the provision of eggs was limited to just two days a week. With the new MoU, students from Grade 1 to 10 will receive one egg daily on all school days except Sunday.

The Azim Premji Foundation will supply eggs for four additional days each week, making a total of six days, as part of its commitment to improving student nutrition. For students who do not consume eggs due to cultural preferences, the foundation will provide an alternative high-nutrition supplement.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah highlighted the importance of this initiative, noting that many children attend school without having breakfast and remain without lunch until midday. “I have seen children coming to school without breakfast and staying until noon without lunch. This prompted us to enhance the midday meal program,” he said.

The upgraded meal plan is set to benefit approximately 55 lakh students across the state. The Azim Premji Foundation will collaborate with the Commissioner of School Education and Literacy (CSE) to ensure the delivery of high-quality eggs to all participating schools.
