“Karnataka Government to Implement New Guidelines for Bengaluru Malls After Farmer Denied Entry Due to Traditional Attire”

Karnataka Government to Issue Guidelines Following Bengaluru Mall Incident

In response to a recent controversy, the Karnataka government has announced plans to issue new guidelines for malls and other establishments in Bengaluru. This decision follows the denial of entry to a farmer at the G T World mall due to his traditional attire.

On July 18, the Karnataka government ordered the closure of the G T World mall for seven days after it was revealed that a septuagenarian farmer, Fakeerappa from Haveri district, was refused entry because he was wearing a ‘panche’ (dhoti), a traditional garment. The incident, which occurred on July 16, has drawn widespread condemnation from various political leaders and the public.

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar addressed the Assembly on Monday, emphasizing that the government views the incident as an infringement on the farmer’s dignity and self-respect. He stated that guidelines would be issued to prevent similar occurrences in the future, affecting not just malls but other public places, regardless of their size.

Shivakumar revealed that the mall in question had outstanding tax dues of approximately ₹2 crore, some of which were still pending. Although the mall has paid its dues and issued a written apology, the government has taken steps to ensure compliance before allowing the mall to resume operations.

The incident has sparked a debate on whether similar guidelines should extend to private clubs. JD(S) floor leader C.B. Suresh Babu suggested including clubs in the guidelines, highlighting that individuals wearing traditional attire are often barred from such establishments. However, Law Minister H.K. Patil cautioned against mixing this specific issue with broader concerns about private clubs and bars.

Opposition Leader R. Ashoka welcomed the government’s move to issue guidelines but recommended that such directives be incorporated into licensing agreements to ensure lasting impact. He argued that including these guidelines in the licensing process would prevent traditional attire from being a basis for exclusion in the future.

Congress MLA and Chief Minister’s economic adviser Basavaraj Rayareddi also supported the idea of extending guidelines to clubs, pointing out that many impose dress restrictions on patrons.
