Jammu and Kashmir is currently experiencing a prolonged spell of cold weather, with sub-zero temperatures recorded across various regions of the state. According to the Meteorological (MeT) department, dry weather conditions have dominated the region, with temperatures dropping significantly during the night.
The coldest temperature was recorded at Pahalgam, a southern resort town in Anantnag district, where the mercury dipped to a chilling -4.4°C. Gulmarg, the northern resort town, also saw a notable dip in temperatures, recording -2.6°C. The summer capital of the region, Srinagar, witnessed a minimum temperature of -0.6°C. Other areas also reported below-freezing temperatures, including Qazigund, which saw -2.4°C, and Kokernag, which recorded a slightly higher 0.4°C.
The MeT department forecasted that the weather will remain generally dry until November 29. However, as the end of the month approaches, the weather is expected to turn cloudy, with light rain and snow predicted over the higher reaches of the region. These conditions are likely to begin late on the night of November 29 and continue into the morning of November 30.
Looking further ahead, the MeT department expects partly cloudy weather on December 1, accompanied by light rain and snow at higher elevations in isolated places. Precipitation is anticipated to increase, with scattered rain and snow expected from the late afternoon of December 2 through the morning of December 3.
As winter settles in, the region is bracing for more intense cold spells and the possibility of snowfall in the coming days, adding to the challenges faced by locals and tourists alike. The MeT department’s forecasts suggest that the cold weather is likely to persist, making it crucial for residents to take precautions against the extreme temperatures.
