Kerala Man Killed, Relative Injured in Russia-Ukraine Conflict: Family Confirms

A man from Kerala’s Thrissur district, who had gone to Russia seeking better job opportunities, has tragically lost his life in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. The deceased, Binil Babu (31), was confirmed dead by the Indian Embassy in Moscow, according to his family. His relative, Jain, who had also traveled to Russia, sustained injuries during the conflict and is recovering in a Moscow hospital.

Binil, a native of Kuttanellur in Thrissur, had left for Russia in April 2024 after being promised lucrative job opportunities by a distant relative. Initially, Binil and Jain were employed in non-combat roles, including the distribution of supplies to soldiers on the war front. However, in December 2024, both men were sent to the frontlines after receiving basic training and were given weapons.

The family was informed about Binil’s death around 1 pm on Monday, following confirmation from the Indian Embassy. The family remains uncertain about the exact details of his death and is awaiting further information.

Saneesh, a family member, recounted speaking to Binil over WhatsApp on January 4. During their conversation, Binil shared his traumatic experiences, revealing the harsh conditions on the frontlines, where he lacked adequate food and water. Binil expressed his desire to return home to be with his wife and newborn son.

Binil’s relative, Jain, who also traveled to Russia with him, was injured during the conflict. He sustained stomach injuries while on the battlefield and has since undergone surgery in Moscow. Jain is recovering, and his family is now focused on bringing him back to Kerala.

This tragic loss echoes a similar incident in August 2024, where another man from Kerala, Sandeep Chandran (36), was killed in a shell attack while moving in a military convoy during the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Like Binil and Jain, Sandeep had been promised lucrative jobs in Russia, only to be forced into the conflict.
