Loco Pilot Averts Tragedy as Train with 500 Passengers Derails Near Villupuram

Train Derails Near Villupuram in Tamil Nadu, Loco Pilot Averts Major Accident

A potentially disastrous train derailment was narrowly avoided on Tuesday morning when the loco pilot of a passenger train bound for Puducherry swiftly brought the train to a halt after a coach derailed near Villupuram. The incident, which occurred just after the train’s departure, did not result in any injuries, and train services were restored within three hours.

The Villupuram-Puducherry MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train, carrying approximately 500 passengers, derailed while crossing a curve at around 5:25 am. The quick reaction of the loco pilot, who noticed the derailment and immediately stopped the train, played a crucial role in preventing a major disaster.

    Investigation Underway

The cause of the derailment is yet to be determined, as an official inquiry has been ordered. According to railway officials, the derailment led to a temporary disruption of services on the Villupuram-Puducherry route until 8:30 am. The MEMU train operates on a relatively short route of about 38 kilometers, but the incident caused significant delays for passengers traveling between the two towns.

    No Casualties Reported

Thankfully, there were no casualties or injuries reported, and all passengers were safely evacuated from the affected coach. The swift action of the loco pilot and the timely intervention of the railway authorities were instrumental in averting a potential tragedy.

The authorities have promised a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the derailment and to ensure such incidents do not occur in the future.
