
A 48-year-old woman tragically lost her life after suffering severe burn injuries while performing a religious ritual at her home in Maharashtra’s Thane district, police said on Monday.
The incident occurred on Saturday in Kalyan town, located on the outskirts of Mumbai. According to officials from the Manpada police station in Dombivli, the victim, identified as Archana Dharmendra Kumar, was lighting oil lamps during a puja ceremony at her residence when her clothing accidentally caught fire.
“The flames quickly spread through her dress, and she sustained critical burn injuries,” said a police officer, citing information provided by her husband. Family members present at the time acted swiftly and rushed her to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Despite efforts by medical personnel, Archana succumbed to her injuries in the early hours of Sunday. Her body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
Police have registered a case of accidental death and are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
The tragedy has cast a pall over the local community and serves as a grim reminder of the importance of fire safety during domestic religious rituals.
