In a significant development, security forces in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) achieved a major victory as they eliminated one of the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) most wanted terrorists and LeT commander during an encounter on Wednesday night in Kulgam district. The encounter, which took place in the Redwani Payeen area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam, resulted in the death of three terrorists, including Basit Ahmed Dar, a prominent figure in the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) offshoot group known as The Resistant Front (TRF).
Basit Ahmed Dar, a resident of Redwani Payeen, was not only a LeT commander but also a key figure involved in various acts of violence, including the killings of civilians and security personnel. Alongside Dar, the operation led to the demise of two other LeT militants, identified as Momin Gulzar and Fahim Ahmed Baba.
Inspector General of Police Kashmir V K Birdi hailed the operation as a significant achievement, citing the involvement of the militants in 18 killings, targeting both security forces and civilians. The security forces’ success comes in the wake of heightened tensions following an attack on an Indian Air Force convoy in Poonch district on May 4, which resulted in one officer’s death and injuries to four others.
The security situation in J&K has been under scrutiny, with intensified search operations underway after the recent attack. CCTV footage and photographs of the three terrorists allegedly involved in the Poonch attack were released, identifying them as Illiyas, a former Pakistan Army commando, a Pakistani terrorist known as Hadoon (or Hadun), and Abu Hamza, a LeT commander.
