Massive Crowd at New Delhi Railway Station Triggers Chaos, No Stampede Reported

Heavy Rush at New Delhi Railway Station Sparks Chaos, But No Stampede Reported

A surge in passenger congestion at New Delhi Railway Station led to chaotic scenes on platforms 12 and 13 on Sunday night due to multiple train delays. While the situation caused panic among commuters, officials confirmed that no stampede or injuries were reported.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Railways, the heavy rush resulted in passengers scaling barricades and jumping queues in an attempt to board their trains. However, timely intervention by authorities helped prevent any mishaps.

The crowding intensified as several trains were delayed, leading to a near-stampede situation. In response, Delhi Police implemented strict crowd management measures to ensure safety. Officials later confirmed that as some trains departed, the situation was brought under control.

    Maha Kumbh Stampede Reminder

Sunday’s chaos comes just weeks after a tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on February 15, during a rush of devotees heading to the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

During a recent Parliament session, railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw refrained from disclosing the exact number of casualties, but earlier reports confirmed that 18 people had lost their lives, while 15 others sustained injuries in the incident.

The government has since compensated affected families, distributing ₹2.01 crore in total. Families of the deceased received ₹10 lakh each, while ₹2.5 lakh was given to those with serious injuries. Individuals with minor injuries were awarded ₹1 lakh each.

While Sunday’s crowding did not result in any casualties, the incident highlights the ongoing challenge of managing large passenger volumes at one of India’s busiest railway hubs. Authorities continue to monitor train schedules and crowd control measures to prevent such situations in the future.
