In a startling development, Om Prakash Jogender Singh (OPJS) University, a private institution in Rajasthan, is embroiled in controversy over allegedly issuing fake and backdated degrees. The Rajasthan police’s Special Operation Group (SOG) has launched an investigation into the university’s practices dating back to its establishment in 2013.
The investigation stems from serious allegations that the university issued a staggering 43,409 fake degrees, including PhDs, engineering degrees, and degrees in physical education. This revelation has raised concerns about the authenticity of qualifications obtained from OPJS University, which is located in Churu.
The scrutiny intensified after 1,300 applicants for the 2022 physical training instructor (PTI) exam submitted degrees from OPJS University, despite the accreditation for the PTI course being granted only in 2016 and for a limited number of seats. This discrepancy has cast doubt on the validity of qualifications used for government job applications and visa purposes.
Joginder Singh Dalal, the founder-owner of OPJS University, was recently arrested in connection with the alleged scam. Initial investigations suggest that Dalal may have facilitated the issuance of backdated degrees to individuals requiring graduation certificates for various official purposes.
Paris Deshmukh, DIG of SOG Rajasthan, highlighted the implausibility of a university with fewer than 30 employees managing to issue such a vast number of degrees. The investigation also uncovered complaints from multiple students, further prompting authorities to delve deeper into the university’s operations.
In response to the escalating controversy, the Rajasthan higher education department has issued an order on June 24 to cease new admissions to all courses offered by OPJS University. This move aims to prevent further complications arising from potentially illegitimate academic credentials.
The unfolding scandal has sparked widespread concern among students, educators, and regulatory bodies alike, underscoring the need for stringent oversight and accountability in the higher education sector. Authorities continue to gather evidence and conduct inquiries to ascertain the extent of the alleged malpractice and ensure justice for affected parties.
