Meghalaya Police Deploy Drones and Sniffer Dogs in Search for Missing Indore Couple

Meghalaya police have intensified their search efforts for an Indore couple who went missing in the East Khasi Hills district’s Sohra area. On Wednesday, authorities deployed drones and sniffer dogs to assist search teams scouring the rugged terrain near the famous root bridges.

Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife Sonam arrived in Mawlakhiat village on May 22. After settling in, they rented a scooter to visit the root bridges at Nongriat village in Sohra, a popular trekking destination. The couple spent a night at Nongriat before checking out the next day with plans to return to Mawlakhiat. However, their scooter was later found abandoned at a cafe on the road between Shillong and Sohra on May 24, raising concerns about their whereabouts.

Police teams, supported by local villagers, had been conducting search operations since the couple was reported missing on Sunday evening. A relative who was unable to contact them filed the initial missing complaint. Despite extensive efforts, police have yet to confirm any verified information about the couple’s movements, and their phones remain switched off.

Senior officials said the latest search operation involved three teams working from early morning until sunset, aided by drones and K9 units to cover difficult-to-access areas along the trekking route.

This incident echoes a tragic case from April, when the body of a Hungarian tourist, Puskas Zsolt, was found near Ramdait village after going missing during a solo trek to the same root bridges. Authorities ruled out foul play in that case, concluding the tourist likely died from an accidental fall.

The Meghalaya police continue their search with hope of finding the couple safe, while urging trekkers to exercise caution in the region’s challenging terrain.
