Tensions flared once again in Bengal’s Sandeshkhali island, North 24 Parganas district, as fresh protests erupted following the detention of a young man by the police. The demonstrations, reported from the Bermojur and Jhupkhali areas, saw villagers taking to the streets, accusing the police of wrongful detentions and resorting to arson to block a police car.
The region has been embroiled in violence over the past 10 days, triggered by allegations of “land-grab and sexual assault” by Trinamool leaders. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC have been enforced in the area, prohibiting gatherings of four or more individuals in public spaces.
In an effort to restore order, Director General of Police West Bengal, Rajeev Kumar, and Additional Director General of Police (South Bengal) Supratim Sarkar were dispatched to Sandeshkhali. However, tensions persisted as clashes intensified between law enforcement and protesters.
Speaking on the situation, top cop Rajeev Kumar acknowledged the missteps, conceding to the wrongful detainment of individuals and pledging to uphold the rule of law. Meanwhile, a BJP delegation led by MP Locket Chatterjee was detained by the police, further exacerbating the political tensions between the BJP and Trinamool Congress.
While the BJP alleged police brutality and interference, accusing authorities of thwarting efforts to expose the truth, the Trinamool accused the BJP of instigating unrest for political gain. Cabinet Minister Shashi Panja urged for the state government’s intervention and emphasized the need for law enforcement to address grievances while denouncing the BJP’s attempts to exacerbate the situation.
Amidst the political blame game and escalating tensions, the plight of the residents in Sandeshkhali remains a focal point, with concerns over safety and justice prevailing amidst the turmoil. As authorities strive to quell the unrest and restore order, the volatile situation underscores the delicate balance between political interests and the welfare of the affected communities.
