Nitin Gadkari, the seasoned leader known for his prowess in infrastructure development, has been appointed as the Transport Minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third-term cabinet. This announcement came as part of the portfolio allocation, unveiled a day after the new coalition government was sworn in, comprising 71 ministers.
At 67, Nitin Gadkari brings a wealth of experience to the Transport Ministry, backed by a successful track record in spearheading road and highway expansion projects. He will be supported by two deputies – Ajay Tamta, BJP MP from Almora, and Harsh Malhotra, a first-time BJP MP from the East Delhi constituency.
Prime Minister Modi hailed his council of ministers as “a great blend of youth and experience,” indicating a strategic combination to drive the nation forward.
Gadkari’s previous tenure as Transport Minister witnessed a remarkable surge in national highway construction, with government data indicating a 143% increase in the average pace of development. He is also credited with launching the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme, aimed at enhancing safety standards for passenger vehicles.
A stalwart in Indian politics, Gadkari began his journey as a student leader and later joined the Janata Yuva Morcha, the youth wing of the BJP. His early foray into public service saw him serve as a PWD minister in Maharashtra, where he gained valuable experience in infrastructure projects.
Having been a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council since 1989 and later assuming leadership roles within the BJP, Gadkari’s rise within the party ranks culminated in his appointment as the youngest-ever BJP National President in 2009. This move came during a challenging phase for the party, necessitating a strategic overhaul.
The opening of the parliament session is anticipated next week, where crucial discussions and appointments, including the election of the speaker, are expected to take place. Nitin Gadkari’s return to the Transport Ministry signals a continued focus on infrastructure development and strategic leadership in shaping India’s growth trajectory.
