India Hosts World Heritage Committee Meeting: PM Modi to Address Gathering

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 46th Session of the World Heritage Committee on Sunday at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. This marks the first time India is hosting this prestigious event.

In a statement posted on X, PM Modi expressed his joy at India’s hosting of the World Heritage Committee meeting, stating, “It’s a matter of immense joy that India is hosting the meeting of the World Heritage Committee in New Delhi. This is the first time our nation is hosting this Committee. I look forward to attending the programme at 7 p.m. tomorrow evening. This is an important forum to exchange views on ways to preserve our heritage.”

The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that PM Modi will also address the gathering. The inaugural event will be attended by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, alongside more than 2,000 international and national delegates from over 150 countries.

The meeting, scheduled to take place from July 21 to July 31, will be held at Bharat Mandapam. The World Heritage Committee, which meets annually, will discuss various topics including the nomination of new World Heritage sites, State of Conservation reports for 124 existing sites, and the utilization of World Heritage Funds.

In conjunction with the main event, the World Heritage Young Professionals’ Forum and the World Heritage Site Managers’ Forum will also be conducted. The Bharat Mandapam will host several exhibitions, including the “Return of Treasures” Exhibition, which will display over 350 retrieved artefacts. Additionally, immersive AR & VR experiences will be offered for three of India’s World Heritage sites: Rani ki Vav in Patan, Gujarat; Kailasa Temple in Ellora Caves, Maharashtra; and Hoysala Temple in Halebid, Karnataka.
