In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal intervention has led to the release of seven out of eight Indian ex-Navy personnel who were facing death sentences in Qatar. Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra attributed the success directly to PM Modi’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safe return of the individuals to India.
Addressing the media on Monday, Kwatra highlighted PM Modi’s hands-on approach to the case, stating that the Prime Minister had been closely monitoring the developments and had spearheaded all initiatives aimed at securing the release of the ex-government officials. The Foreign Secretary expressed gratitude for the return of seven individuals and affirmed ongoing efforts to facilitate the return of the eighth individual, who remains in Qatar pending some paperwork.
This development comes in the wake of PM Modi’s recent meeting with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani during the COP28 Summit in Dubai in December. During the meeting, discussions centered around the well-being of the Indian community in Qatar, underscoring the importance of bilateral relations between the two nations.
Furthermore, PM Modi’s upcoming visit to Doha on February 14 signifies a continuation of diplomatic efforts to strengthen ties between India and Qatar. Scheduled after his visit to the United Arab Emirates, PM Modi’s trip will include bilateral talks with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and other dignitaries, aimed at enhancing cooperation and addressing mutual concerns.
The release of the Indian ex-Navy personnel marks a significant milestone in the diplomatic relations between India and Qatar. Notably, the involvement of National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in negotiations with Qatari officials underscores the strategic importance of the matter to the Indian government.
The eight individuals, including Captains Navtej Gill and Saurabh Vasisht, Commanders Purnendu Tiwari, Amit Nagpal, SK Gupta, BK Verma, Sugunakar Pakala, and sailor Ragesh, were detained while working for a private company in Qatar. While seven have returned home, Commander Tiwari remains in Qatar due to pending paperwork.
PM Modi’s proactive engagement and decisive action in resolving this sensitive issue have been lauded both domestically and internationally. His personal commitment to safeguarding the interests of Indian nationals abroad underscores India’s dedication to protecting its citizens worldwide.
PM Modi’s visit to Qatar not only signifies a diplomatic victory but also presents an opportunity to further enhance cooperation between the two nations across various sectors. As India continues to play a prominent role on the global stage, such diplomatic achievements reaffirm the country’s commitment to pursuing peace, prosperity, and the well-being of its citizens worldwide.
