In a latest development, a police case has been initiated against former Congress president Rahul Gandhi and other party leaders in Assam, following clashes during his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. The political turmoil escalated when Rahul Gandhi’s march reentered Assam from Meghalaya, with the yatra being denied permission to enter Guwahati thoroughfares, leading to a heated standoff.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the filing of a criminal case against Rahul Gandhi and Congress leaders, citing “wanton acts of violence” during the yatra. The BJP-ruled state accused Gandhi of provoking the crowd, which resulted in a massive traffic jam in Guwahati. In response, Rahul Gandhi dismissed the case as an outcome of fear within the ruling party.
The Assam Police has also filed an FIR against Congress leaders KC Venugopal and Kanhaiya Kumar in connection with the alleged violence during the yatra. The tensions reached a peak as Congress workers, protesting the denial of entry into Guwahati, broke police barricades and raised slogans.
The clash intensified as Chief Minister Sarma, taking to social media, directed the police to register the case against Rahul Gandhi, utilizing videos posted by Congress leaders as evidence. In his response, Gandhi accused the BJP of attempting to disrupt the yatra, emphasizing the impact it has had in various regions.
Rahul Gandhi alleged that he was not allowed to interact with students at a private university in Meghalaya, claiming it was at the “instructions” of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The Congress leader expressed confidence that the party is benefiting from the controversy, stating that the yatra has become a significant issue in Assam.
The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, spanning 6,713 kilometers and commencing on January 14 from Manipur, is scheduled to conclude on March 20 in Mumbai. The ongoing political duel between Rahul Gandhi and Himanta Biswa Sarma continues to capture the attention of the nation, with both leaders using various platforms to critique each other. The yatra has become a focal point in the political landscape of Assam, showcasing the deep-seated rivalry between the Congress and the ruling BJP.
