A devastating hit-and-run incident late Sunday night near Harris Bridge in Pune’s Khadki area has resulted in the death of one police officer and left another injured. The driver responsible for the accident, identified as Siddharth Kengar, aged 24, was arrested the following day.
The tragedy unfolded when beat marshals Sanjog Shinde and Samadhan Koli were on routine patrol duty near Harris Bridge. According to senior officials, their motorcycle was struck from behind by a speeding Swift car driven by Kengar. The impact caused both officers to fall from their bike, resulting in Koli’s fatal injuries and leaving Shinde hospitalized in a private facility.
“After colliding with the police motorcycle, the driver fled the scene. We immediately launched a search operation to apprehend him,” stated a police official.
Kengar, who works at a service center, was tracked down and arrested at his residence in the Pimple Nilakh area by crime branch personnel who noticed his damaged vehicle fleeing the scene. His blood samples have been collected for analysis as part of the investigation.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Vijaykumar Magar confirmed the details of the incident, noting that Kengar was driving a vehicle belonging to a friend at the time of the collision. “Prima facie evidence suggests that Kengar was behind the wheel of the speeding car that collided with the police motorcycle,” DCP Magar added.
The accused has been charged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (Indian Penal Code) and the Motor Vehicles Act. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.
