Water leakage concerns have surfaced at the Mumbai Coastal Road’s tunnels, with drips observed from the tunnel’s roof and dampness affecting the walls, even before the monsoon season officially begins. The situation was noted on Monday, highlighting potential challenges for the infrastructure project.
Chief Engineer Girish Nikam of the coastal road project acknowledged the leaks, attributing them to dampness seeping through construction joints. Efforts are underway to address the issue, including plans for grouting to seal the leaks. The precise cause of the leaks is yet to be determined, but they are believed to be associated with the joints connecting the tunnel segments.
The leakage problem has persisted since Sunday morning and escalated by Monday evening, prompting intensified efforts for resolution. An official involved in the tunnel’s construction mentioned that initial waterproofing measures were taken using grouting. However, further assessments are required to determine if additional grouting is necessary to mitigate the leaks effectively.
This development raises concerns about the readiness of the coastal road infrastructure to handle upcoming monsoon conditions. The incident follows previous instances of water ingress, such as tidal waters entering the Haji Ali Coastal Road’s pedestrian underpass during high tide in April.
The BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) is actively working on solutions to prevent water collection in vulnerable areas, including implementing measures like constructing a hump at the pedestrian underpass’s mouth and installing a pipe parallel to the pathway to redirect water flow towards the seaside.
