Prime Minister Modi Meets Palestinian President, Raises "Serious Concern" Over Gaza Situation

In a significant diplomatic engagement on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel in New York. During the meeting, PM Modi expressed his “deep concern” over the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, reaffirming India’s steadfast support for the Palestinian people.

India has consistently advocated for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, and this meeting underscored the country’s commitment to the region. Modi’s remarks came in light of escalating violence and deteriorating conditions in Gaza. India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, stated in a post on social media platform X: “PM @narendramodi met H.E. Mahmoud Abbas, President of Palestine, on the sidelines of UNGA today. PM expressed deep concern at the humanitarian situation in Gaza and reaffirmed India’s continued support to the people of Palestine.”

This meeting follows India’s earlier condemnation of the terror attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, while simultaneously calling for attention to the dire situation in Gaza. As part of its efforts to aid Palestinians, India recently dispatched humanitarian assistance to Gaza and committed financial support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestine refugees.

In addition to meeting with President Abbas, PM Modi also held bilateral discussions with key leaders, including Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah. During his meeting with the Crown Prince of Kuwait, PM Modi focused on enhancing India-Kuwait relations and strengthening their historical and cultural ties.

Earlier, the Prime Minister participated in a roundtable with U.S. tech leaders hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) School of Engineering, emphasizing India’s growth potential and opportunities for innovation across various sectors. His visit to the U.S. also included participation in the Quad Summit, where he held important bilateral talks with U.S. President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

The Prime Minister’s three-day visit to the United States concluded with a high-energy address to the Indian diaspora at the Nassau Coliseum in New York, highlighting India’s global presence and future aspirations.
