During his recent state visit to Bhutan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi experienced a warm and familial reception from the Bhutanese Royal Family, underscoring the strong ties between India and Bhutan. The visit included several memorable moments, including a special family dinner hosted by Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck at the Lingkana Palace.
This dinner marked a historic occasion as it was the first time an Indian Prime Minister was hosted at the K5 Residence Lingkana Palace by the Bhutanese King. The entire Royal Family, including Queen Jetsun Pema and their three children – Jigme Namgyel, Jigme Ugyen, and Sonam Yangden – graced the private dinner with their presence on Friday.
The interactions between PM Modi and the young princes were captured in endearing photographs, showcasing the Prime Minister’s friendly demeanor and rapport with the Bhutanese Royals. In one such image, PM Modi is seen engaging with the princes, while Princess Sonam rests in Queen Pema’s lap, creating a heartwarming scene of camaraderie.
An official shared with news agency PTI, “No Indian PM has been given a private dinner by the King before. PM Modi is being given this privilege. It was the first time that an Indian PM was hosted at Lingkana Palace. And, it is the first time that an Indian PM being given the highest award by Bhutan. In fact, he is the first foreign national to be given the Bhutanese award.”
PM Modi’s visit also witnessed unprecedented gestures of friendship from Bhutan, with people lining the streets for a 45-kilometre stretch from Paro to Thimphu to welcome him. Additionally, the Prime Minister interacted with members of the Indian community and local Bhutanese people gathered outside his hotel in Thimphu.
A significant highlight of the visit was PM Modi being conferred with the ‘Order of the Druk Gyalpo,’ Bhutan’s highest civilian honour. This accolade recognizes PM Modi’s contributions to strengthening the friendship between India and Bhutan and his people-centric leadership.
Expressing his gratitude, PM Modi stated, “Honoured to be conferred with the ‘Order of the Druk Gyalpo’ Award by Bhutan. I dedicate it to 140 crore Indians.”
The visit concluded with PM Modi reaffirming India’s steadfast support for Bhutan’s development by pledging ₹10,000 crore over the next five years, further solidifying the enduring bond between the two Himalayan nations.
