Pune has reported another suspected death linked to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), bringing the total number of fatalities in the state to eight. The latest victim, a 59-year-old man from Khadakwasla, passed away while undergoing treatment at Kashibai Navale Medical College. The official cause of death has been attributed to Hypotensive Shock, Pulmonary Embolism, and GBS, according to Dr. Babita Kamlapurkar, Joint Director of Health Services.
Details of the Deceased Patient
The deceased developed symptoms, including weakness and loss of strength in all four limbs, on February 10. He was admitted to the hospital the same day, as he struggled with basic movements like holding a glass of water or buttoning his shirt. The Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) test confirmed Acute Motor Axonal Neuropathy. Unfortunately, he succumbed to the illness in the early hours of February 11, as per state health officials.
Health Monitoring for Recovered Patients
In response to the rising cases, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated a health monitoring program for patients who have recovered from GBS. The initiative aims to track their recovery progress, identify complications, and analyze long-term health trends. Civic health officials believe this measure will help enhance patient care and offer insights for future medical interventions.
Six New Suspected Cases, Total Cases Surpass 200
Along with the reported death, Pune recorded six fresh suspected GBS cases on Wednesday, pushing the total number of cases in Maharashtra to 203. Among these, 176 cases have been officially confirmed as GBS, Dr. Kamlapurkar stated. The PMC has also started regular follow-ups with recovered patients from February 13 to better understand recovery periods and detect any post-recovery health concerns.

According to official data:
- 109 patients have been successfully treated and discharged.
- 86 patients remain hospitalized across different medical facilities.
- 52 patients are in Intensive Care Units (ICUs).
