A railway porter was tragically killed on Saturday during a shunting operation at Barauni Junction in Bihar’s Begusarai district. The victim, identified as Amar Kumar Rao, was performing his duties on platform 5 when the accident occurred.
Rao, employed under the Sonpur Railway Division, was attempting to uncouple the Lucknow-Barauni Express (Train No: 15204) as it arrived from Lucknow Junction. According to railway sources, the accident unfolded when the train unexpectedly reversed while Rao was engaged in opening the coupling mechanism. In a shocking turn of events, the reversal of the train trapped Rao between two coaches.
Upon realizing the severity of the situation, bystanders raised the alarm. However, the train driver reportedly fled the scene, failing to take any immediate action, such as reversing the engine or stopping the train. Tragically, Rao was crushed by the moving coaches and died on the spot.
Disturbing visuals from the scene showed Rao trapped between the carriages while several onlookers appeared to be taking photos and videos of the incident on their mobile phones. Despite the tragic circumstances, no immediate action was taken by those present to assist the victim or provide aid.
The incident has raised serious concerns regarding railway safety protocols and the lack of responsibility shown by the train driver, who reportedly fled the scene. Authorities are investigating the matter, and an inquiry has been initiated to determine the cause of the accident and the actions of the involved railway staff.
Rao’s untimely death has left his family in mourning, while the railway union and safety advocates are calling for increased measures to prevent such incidents and ensure the safety of workers involved in high-risk operations at stations.
The incident also highlights the alarming trend of bystanders capturing traumatic events on their mobile phones rather than intervening to assist those in need, further fueling debates about the responsibility of witnesses in emergencies.
