In response to a violent incident at a government school in Udaipur, Rajasthan’s Education Department has issued a directive prohibiting sharp-edged objects such as knives and scissors in schools. The decision comes after a Class 10 student was severely injured in a stabbing by a classmate on Friday.
The attack occurred at a government school in Bhatiyani Chauhatta, Udaipur, when one 15-year-old student assaulted another with a knife, leading to significant injuries. This incident sparked violence in the city, including the burning of cars and stone-pelting by enraged residents.
Following the attack, the Rajasthan Education Department implemented new guidelines to enhance student safety. The measures include mandatory checks of student bags by teachers to prevent the carrying of sharp objects. Any student found violating this new rule will face disciplinary action.
Ashish Modi, Director of the Secondary Education Department, emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe learning environment. He stated, “Schools should be the safest place for students, and incidents of violence have no place in educational institutions.”
The new directive will be prominently displayed on school notice boards, and students will be informed during assembly sessions.
The violent incident also led to heightened security measures in Udaipur, with large police deployments and lathi-charges used to control the agitated crowds. Prohibitory orders were enforced under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha to curb further disturbances.
