A dispute over rash driving in Bhopal’s Jahangirabad area escalated into a violent communal clash on Tuesday, leaving at least six people, including women, injured. The situation became chaotic, with stones being thrown and swords being brandished before a large police presence was deployed to restore order.
According to local authorities, the altercation began on Sunday when Faiz, a resident of the area, was accused of driving recklessly through the neighborhood. This triggered a confrontation with individuals from another community. During the argument, Faiz reportedly grabbed a knife from a nearby vegetable cart and attacked a person, leading to a police report and his subsequent arrest.
On Tuesday, the situation intensified when the person involved in the Sunday incident, who had not been arrested, was seen in the area. This reignited the tension, with members of the community who felt aggrieved over the initial arrest throwing stones at the opposing group. A large-scale confrontation soon followed, with the attackers brandishing swords and engaging in violent clashes.
Police officials, led by Additional Commissioner of Police Awadhesh Kumar Goswami, swiftly intervened. “The initial fight occurred on Sunday. Three individuals from the group involved were arrested at the time. However, the situation reignited on Tuesday when the person who was not arrested appeared in the area,” Goswami explained. “Stones were thrown, and police intervened quickly to de-escalate the situation.”
The police swiftly took action, arresting the two remaining suspects involved in the Sunday incident. Surveillance footage is being reviewed to identify those who threw stones, and further legal action will be taken.
The area saw a heavy police presence following the altercation, with additional forces deployed to prevent any further violence. Officers assured the public that the situation was under control and that efforts were being made to maintain peace in the locality. The authorities are also monitoring the situation closely to prevent any communal flare-ups in the future.
