In the wake of the devastating Air India plane crash that claimed the lives of nearly all 242 people onboard, Tata Group on Thursday announced ₹1 crore compensation for the families of the deceased. The announcement comes as the airline, operated by Tata-owned Air India, grapples with one of the worst aviation disasters in recent Indian history.
Air India and Tata Sons Chairman, N Chandrasekaran, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy in a statement posted on social media platform X. “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of all those affected by this devastating event,” he wrote.
Chandrasekaran emphasized that Air India’s top priority remains supporting the victims’ families. “We are doing everything in our power to assist the emergency response teams at the site and to provide all necessary support and care to those impacted,” he said.
He also confirmed the setup of an emergency centre and dedicated support team to provide real-time updates and verified information to the families of those affected.
Relief Flights Arranged
To aid the families of the victims, Air India has arranged two special relief flights on Thursday night—one each from Delhi and Mumbai to Ahmedabad. Return flights will also be operated for those needing to travel back to the metro cities.
Family members of the victims can contact Air India’s hotline at 1800 5691 444 for domestic travel and +91 8062779200 for international inquiries.
Over 200 Bodies Recovered
More than 204 bodies have been recovered, according to Ahmedabad Police Commissioner G S Malik. The fatalities include passengers, crew, and possibly individuals on the ground, as the aircraft crashed into a residential zone near a medical college shortly after takeoff.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was en route from Ahmedabad to London’s Gatwick Airport when it went down, triggering a massive rescue operation and national mourning.
As investigations continue, the Tata Group’s swift response and compensation announcement have been seen as a crucial step in addressing the grief and needs of the bereaved families.
