Tension has risen in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, following communal clashes that erupted during a Durga idol immersion ceremony, resulting in the death of one person. The unrest began in the Mahrajganj area of Mansoor village on the evening of the incident, with reports of shops being set ablaze and groups of men armed with sticks and iron rods seen roaming the streets.
In response to the violence, local authorities have detained around 30 individuals believed to be involved in the clashes. Home Secretary Sanjeev Gupta and Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash have arrived at the scene to assess the situation. “The situation is being brought under control, and anti-social elements are being chased away,” said Vrinda Shukla, a senior police officer.
The clashes reportedly started over an argument regarding loud music played during the immersion procession. Tensions escalated, leading to stone-throwing and gunfire, resulting in six injuries. Ram Gopal Mishra, a local resident, sustained gunshot wounds and died during treatment at a local hospital.
Following the incident, Mishra’s family refused to cremate his body, staging a protest until police and administration officials assured them of action. “We are moving ahead with the last rites,” stated Sureshwar Singh, the BJP MLA from Mahsi. The family has demanded legal action against those responsible for the violence and the suspension of senior police officials at the local outpost.
Authorities have filed charges against an individual identified as Salman, from whose house the gunfire originated. Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed her concern on social media, urging the Chief Minister to take immediate action to prevent further violence and restore peace. Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya echoed her sentiments, emphasizing the need for vigilance to maintain harmony in the state.
