The arrest of Asem Kanan, a prominent member of the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol, by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has triggered widespread unrest and violent protests across Manipur’s valley districts. The Anti-Corruption Branch of the CBI apprehended Kanan at Imphal airport on Sunday, citing his involvement in criminal activities related to the 2023 Manipur violence. Following the arrest, the group declared a 10-day statewide shutdown demanding the unconditional release of their detained members.
The arrest and ensuing protests have plunged the region into chaos. Hundreds of demonstrators blocked major roads in Imphal city with burning tyres, wooden planks, and debris, leading to clashes with security forces who responded with tear gas, mock bombs, and live rounds to disperse crowds. At least 11 people have been reported injured, including a 13-year-old boy seriously hurt by a tear gas shell explosion.
Due to escalating tensions, security personnel were deployed at key locations such as the Palace Compound in Imphal East, Keishampat Bridge, Moirangkhom, Tiddim Road, and Imphal airport. Authorities have imposed an internet shutdown across the valley districts to curb the spread of unrest.
The Arambai Tenggol group demands include the immediate release of its volunteers arrested during recent crackdowns. Additionally, a women’s group from Khurai in Imphal East issued an ultimatum for all MLAs currently outside the state to return by June 10 to form a new government, warning that those who fail to comply would be barred from re-entering the state.

BJP MLA and spokesperson L. Ibomcha clarified that Kanan’s arrest was linked to a personal case and that four other detained Arambai Tenggol members were being held for background checks, with their release expected if no incriminating evidence is found. Congress MLA Okram Surjakumar echoed calls for transparency and unity, emphasizing the importance of clear communication regarding arrests and urging a focus on peace restoration.
