“Thiruvananthapuram Schools Shut Today Amid Drinking Water Shortage”

Educational Institutions in Thiruvananthapuram Closed Due to Water Shortage; Probe Underway

A holiday was declared for educational institutions across Thiruvananthapuram city on Monday due to a significant delay in the restoration of drinking water supply. The disruption in water services was caused by ongoing construction work related to the alignment of the main transmission line at Melarannur, which has impacted water supply to houses and commercial establishments across 40 municipal wards.

The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has been working on changing the alignment of the water pipeline due to the doubling of the Thiruvananthapuram-Nagercoil railway line. The work has led to a four-day disruption in water supply. Although the pumping of water resumed early Monday morning, the district administration declared a holiday for all educational institutions within the city corporation limits as a precautionary measure. School exams scheduled for Monday have been rescheduled due to the disruption.

By noon on Monday, several areas in Thiruvananthapuram began receiving water, but higher areas continued to face shortages. The situation led to protests by the Youth Congress and the Kerala Students Union (KSU), who demanded accountability from the officials responsible for the delay.

Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine announced that a probe will be conducted to determine the cause of the leak that led to the water supply issue. The investigation will aim to identify those responsible for the delay and address the problems that have affected residents and businesses in the city.
