Three people were injured after their car fell into a dry canal in Bareilly district, Uttar Pradesh, on Tuesday. The accident occurred when the victims, traveling from Bareilly to Pilibhit, decided to take a “shortcut” suggested by Google Maps near Kalapur village.
According to Superintendent of Police (City) Manush Parik, the trio followed the directions provided by the navigation app, which led them off the main road and into the canal. Fortunately, villagers nearby spotted the incident and immediately contacted the police. The injured individuals sustained minor injuries and were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
“The car had fallen into the canal after the passengers opted to follow a shortcut on Google Maps. Fortunately, they were rescued after villagers alerted the authorities,” Parik said in a statement. The car, registered in Haryana, was later pulled out of the canal using a tractor.
This incident marks the second accident related to Google Maps in Bareilly district in less than 10 days. Just last month, three people tragically lost their lives when their car plunged into the Ramganga river after navigating a partially constructed bridge, which had not been updated on Google Maps. The driver of the vehicle unknowingly drove onto the unsafe bridge, which had collapsed during the floods earlier in the year, leading to the fatal accident.
Authorities have urged users of navigation apps to remain vigilant and verify routes before taking unfamiliar paths to avoid accidents in such risky situations.
