A devastating incident unfolded in Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district, where three children lost their lives and nine others fell critically ill after reportedly consuming wild mushrooms. The tragic event occurred in Saphai village, as confirmed by Deputy Commissioner BS Sohliya.
According to reports, twelve members of a family ingested the mushrooms, resulting in the deaths of three children, identified as Riwansaka Suchiang (8), Kitlang Duchiang (12), and Wansalan Suchiang (15). The remaining affected individuals are currently receiving medical treatment at various hospitals.
An investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances leading to this heartbreaking incident. Authorities are focusing on understanding the source and nature of the mushrooms consumed and raising awareness about the risks associated with consuming wild mushrooms without proper identification.
The tragic loss of young lives has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting discussions on food safety and the importance of caution when foraging or consuming unfamiliar plants.
