In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through Delhi, a 30-year-old documentary filmmaker, Piyush Pal, lost his life after a collision between two motorcycles at a traffic signal in south Delhi. The accident, which occurred around 10 pm on October 28, has drawn attention not only due to the untimely death but also because of the alleged neglect and insensitivity exhibited by bystanders.
The incident, captured by a nearby CCTV camera, revealed the harrowing sequence of events. In the video, Piyush Pal’s motorcycle can be seen changing lanes on a busy road near Panchsheel Enclave when it is struck by another bike from behind. The impact caused Pal’s motorcycle to skid and drag along the road for several meters.
Police arrived at the scene to find the filmmaker lying in a pool of blood and immediately rushed him to the hospital for treatment. Tragically, Pal succumbed to his injuries later during the course of medical care. He worked as a freelance filmmaker in Gurugram and was a resident of south Delhi’s Kalkaji.
However, the distressing part of the story lies in the claims made by a friend of the filmmaker. According to the friend, precious moments that could have made a difference were lost as passersby allegedly chose to stand by and take photos instead of extending assistance to the critically injured Pal. Shockingly, he remained unaided, bleeding on the side of the road for more than 20 minutes, as a crowd gathered around him not to help but to document the tragic scene. Adding to the ordeal, Pal’s mobile phone and Go-Pro camera were reported as stolen during this time.
The friend, speaking to news agency PTI, expressed deep frustration, saying, “His mobile phone was ringing until 10 pm, but later it was showing off. A Go-Pro camera which he used for recording videos for his work purpose is also missing. We are not seeking compensation from anyone; we only seek justice.”
In light of the CCTV footage, the police have initiated a case against the other motorcycle rider, identified as Bunty, on charges of rash driving. The incident has sparked outrage and highlighted the need for collective responsibility and compassion in such situations. The tragic loss of Piyush Pal serves as a grim reminder of the importance of human kindness and the consequences of indifference in the face of tragedy.
