In a developing controversy, Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Mahua Moitra faces legal action initiated by the National Commission for Women (NCW) for derogatory remarks aimed at NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma. The NCW has filed a formal complaint with Delhi Police and addressed a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, condemning Moitra’s comments as inappropriate for her position as an elected representative.
The dispute arose following Moitra’s social media commentary on a video showing Sharma’s visit to the site of a recent stampede in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. In response, TMC’s official account criticized Sharma’s actions, drawing sharp criticism from the NCW for its perceived disrespect towards the NCW chairperson.
In its statement, the NCW emphasized that Moitra’s remarks not only undermine Sharma’s dignity but also violate ethical standards expected of public officials. The Commission invoked Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, 2023, in its complaint to Delhi Police, signaling the seriousness with which it views the matter.
Moitra, known for her outspoken demeanor, reacted defiantly on social media, challenging Delhi Police to act swiftly on the NCW’s complaint. She quipped about her availability for arrest within the next few days, adding a satirical twist with a reference to holding her own umbrella.
The NCW’s letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla urges parliamentary intervention to address what it deems a breach of decorum by Moitra. The Commission called upon Speaker Birla to review the situation and take appropriate disciplinary measures in line with parliamentary norms.
