In a tragic incident in Manipur, two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) soldiers lost their lives in an attack by suspected Kuki insurgents. The attack occurred at a camp of the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) in Bishnupur district’s Naranseina village, located 45 km from Imphal, the state capital.
According to sources, a group of suspected Kuki insurgents initiated gunfire from a hillside towards Naranseina village, specifically targeting IRB and CRPF personnel. The assailants used a crude form of handmade ‘artillery’ known as the ‘pumpy gun,’ capable of launching fist-sized explosive projectiles.
The attack, which began around midnight, lasted until 2:15 am, resulting in the deaths of sub-inspector N Sarkar and head constable Arup Saini from the CRPF’s 128 Battalion. Additionally, inspector Jadav Das and constable Aftab Das sustained injuries during the assault.
Police sources indicated that the insurgents’ activity intensified ahead of the first anniversary of the Manipur crisis, hinting at a potential escalation in attacks in the region. Notably, many central force personnel have been redeployed for election duty, highlighting the complex security challenges faced by authorities in Manipur.
The region has experienced heightened tensions, with previous conflicts between Meitei and Kuki-Zo armed groups in August and September 2023 around Naranseina. The valley, primarily inhabited by the Meitei community, contrasts with the hills dominated by the Kuki-Zo tribes, underscoring the ethnic and territorial complexities in Manipur.
Following the attack, a massive combing operation is underway to track down the insurgents responsible for the assault. The incident underscores the ongoing security concerns in Manipur and the challenges faced by security forces in maintaining peace and stability in the region amidst volatile conditions.
