Two trekkers found themselves in a perilous situation during an encounter between terrorists and security forces in the Zabarwan area near Srinagar. The trekkers, who were caught in the crossfire, dialed the emergency helpline (100) to alert the authorities about their location, leading to their successful rescue.
The incident occurred on the evening of November 11 when a joint operation was launched by security forces based on intelligence reports about the presence of terrorists in the area. The trekkers, who were exploring the region, inadvertently became trapped in the line of fire between the terrorists and the security personnel. As the exchange of fire escalated, they took refuge behind rocks for safety.
One of the trekkers managed to call the emergency helpline, providing critical information about their whereabouts. The Police Control Room (PCR) acted swiftly, alerting senior officers and coordinating with a rescue team to evacuate the trekkers from the scene. The security forces temporarily halted their operation to ensure the trekkers’ safe evacuation.
Kashmir Police Chief Vidhi Kumar Birdi later emphasized the importance of trekkers informing local police stations about their travel routes, particularly in areas where security operations are underway. “Trekkers and adventure enthusiasts should inform the nearest police station about their travel plans and expected routes, especially in areas where there could be security operations. This protocol ensures we can act swiftly to ensure their safety if unexpected incidents occur,” Birdi said.
The swift action taken by the PCR team, combined with the coordination between police officers on the ground, was credited with preventing a potential tragedy. Authorities also encouraged locals, tourists, and trekkers to use the helpline services and to contact the police in case of emergencies.
