A 50-year-old woman was discovered chained to a tree in a forest in Sonurli village, Sindhudurg district, on Saturday evening. The woman, identified as Lalita Kayi, was found by a shepherd who heard her cries and promptly alerted the authorities.
According to police officials, the shepherd found the woman in a state of distress and immediately contacted the local police. Upon arrival, officers discovered the woman secured with an iron chain. A photocopy of her US passport, along with an Aadhaar card indicating a Tamil Nadu address, was recovered from her possession. The woman’s visa has expired.
The woman was initially transported to a hospital in Sawantwadi, located in Maharashtra’s Konkan region, and then transferred to Oros in Sindhudurg. Due to her deteriorating health and mental condition, she was further moved to Goa Medical College for advanced treatment. Medical professionals have reported that she is suffering from psychiatric issues and has been under medical care.
Police are currently verifying the documents found with her and working with the Foreigners Regional Registration office to ascertain her nationality and background. Initial findings suggest that she has been in India for approximately ten years.
The woman, who has not been able to provide a clear statement due to her weakened state and malnutrition, is believed to have been tied up for an indeterminate period. Authorities suspect that her husband, who is from Tamil Nadu, may have been responsible for her imprisonment before fleeing the scene.
