In a troubling series of events, three individuals, including two minor girls, have been injured in what is suspected to be wolf attacks in Mahsi Tehsil over the past 48 hours. The incidents occurred in the Hardi and Khairighat police station areas within Mahsi Tehsil.
The latest reported attack took place around 10:30 PM on Wednesday in Maikupurwa village under the Khairighat police station. Pushpa, a 50-year-old woman from Koriyanpurwa hamlet in Bhawanipur, was attacked while sleeping in her courtyard. She sustained injuries from the assault and was initially treated at the Community Health Center (CHC) Mahsi before being referred to Bahraich Medical College for further care.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Ajit Pratap Singh stated that the presence of the wolf could not be confirmed as no pugmarks were found at the scene. Forest teams are currently combing the area in an effort to locate and trap the animal responsible for the attacks.
Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Sanjay Pathak, who is overseeing ‘Operation Bhediya’ in Bahraich, mentioned that while the captured animals appear to be normal wolves, DNA profiling will be conducted to determine if they are hybrids. Pathak emphasized that the hybridization theory cannot be completely ruled out but all trapped animals so far have been identified as wolves.
