5.0 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Nepal, Shakes Parts of North India

Earthquake of Magnitude 5.0 Strikes Nepal, Tremors Felt Across North India

No immediate reports of damage or casualties; tremors come days after Myanmar’s devastating 7.7 magnitude quake

Kathmandu/New Delhi: A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on Friday evening, sending light tremors across parts of northern India. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake occurred at a depth of 20 km at 7:52 pm IST.

The NCS confirmed the seismic event on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
    “EQ of M: 5.0, On: 04/04/2025 19:52:53 IST, Lat: 28.83 N, Long: 82.06 E, Depth: 20 Km, Location: Nepal.”

    Impact and Response

Despite the tremors being felt in North India, there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Authorities are monitoring the situation for any aftershocks or structural damage.

The earthquake comes just days after Myanmar experienced a catastrophic 7.7-magnitude quake on March 28, which resulted in over 3,000 deaths, 4,500 injuries, and 341 people reported missing. That powerful tremor also caused widespread destruction, with roads cracking and buildings collapsing across affected regions.

    Seismic Activity in the Region

Nepal is situated in a seismically active zone due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The country frequently experiences earthquakes, with the most devastating one in recent history being the 2015 Gorkha earthquake, which measured 7.8 in magnitude and killed nearly 9,000 people.

Authorities and experts continue to emphasize the need for earthquake preparedness in the region, given its vulnerability to frequent seismic activity.

    Ongoing Monitoring

As of now, no major disruptions have been reported in Nepal or India. However, officials advise residents to stay alert for potential aftershocks. The NCS and local authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

For real-time earthquake updates, citizens are encouraged to follow official channels and adhere to safety protocols.
