Bengaluru Metro Fare Hike from Feb 9: ₹90 Cap, Smart Card Users Get Discounts

Bengaluru Metro Fare Hike from February 9: Maximum Ticket Price Set at ₹90, Discounts for Smart Card Users

Bengaluru’s Namma Metro will implement a fare hike starting February 9, increasing the maximum ticket price to ₹90, up from the current ₹60. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has confirmed the revised fare structure, despite earlier reports suggesting a possible delay.

    New Metro Fare Structure

While the minimum fare remains unchanged at ₹10 for trips up to two kilometers, longer journeys will see a price hike. Commuters traveling beyond 25 kilometers will now pay ₹90 for a one-way trip. However, smart card users will receive a 5% discount on fares, and additional incentives are being introduced to promote cashless transactions.

The Fare Fixation Committee has also recommended a 10% discount for smart card users on weekends and national holidays, along with an extra 10% discount during non-peak hours. These measures aim to encourage digital payments and ease congestion at metro ticket counters.

    Revenue Impact of Fare Revision

Currently, BMRCL generates around ₹2 crore per day from metro operations. With the fare hike, the corporation expects to increase daily revenue by ₹80 lakh or more, depending on passenger traffic.

The last fare revision for Bengaluru Metro took place in June 2017, making this the first price hike in nearly seven years. The new fare structure was finalized based on a detailed study of metro fares in India and internationally by a committee led by retired Madras High Court judge Justice R. Tharani, alongside Satyendra Pal Singh (Additional Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs) and E.V. Ramana Reddy (former Additional Chief Secretary of Karnataka).

Government’s Initial Opposition to the Hike

Earlier, Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan had stated that the central government directed BMRCL to postpone the fare revision. However, BMRCL has now officially announced that the new pricing structure will be implemented as planned from February 9.

With the fare increase set to take effect, commuters are awaiting further updates on additional discounts or modifications that may be introduced to ease the financial burden on daily passengers.
