Mussoorie Faces Severe Weekend Traffic Jams; Long Delays Frustrate Tourists and Locals

Mussoorie Struggles with Tourist Traffic Jam; Visitors and Locals Face Long Delays

Mussoorie experienced severe traffic congestion over the weekend, turning the usual one-hour drive from Dehradun into a frustrating three-hour journey for both tourists and local residents.

According to Santosh Kunwar, in-charge of Mussoorie police station, the town sees around 6,000 to 7,000 tourist vehicles during weekends. Managing this high volume of traffic with limited parking facilities poses a significant challenge. To ease the situation, police have introduced innovative measures such as a one-way traffic system to help streamline vehicle movement.

Mussoorie Municipal Board chairperson Meera Saklani acknowledged the persistent infrastructure issues and highlighted ongoing projects like the Dehradun-Mussoorie Ropeway and the Mussoorie Tunnel, aimed at providing long-term solutions to traffic problems in the hill station.

Locals pointed out that narrow roads and frequent congestion in key areas such as Gandhi Chowk, Motilal Nehru Road, Picture Palace, and the stretch from Kingcraig to Zero Point contribute to the traffic snarls. Library Chowk, a major junction directing traffic to popular destinations like Mall Road, Kempty Falls, Company Garden, and the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), often faces severe bottlenecks.

To reduce the weekend rush, heavy vehicles including tempo travellers and large buses are barred from entering Mussoorie and are turned back at Kothal Gate. Traffic towards Kempty Falls is redirected from Gajji Bend to Zero Point to avoid congestion at Library Chowk. Additionally, satellite parking lots have been set up at Hathipaon and Kingcraig, located about two to three kilometers from the town center.

The Hathipaon parking area, near George Everest House, accommodates over 900 vehicles, where police guide tourists to use shuttle services to reach Mall Road and other tourist spots. Inspector Kunwar urged visitors to avoid driving into crowded areas by using these shuttle services.

Sanjay Agarwal, president of the Mussoorie Hotel Association, called for the development of a multi-level, secure parking facility to safely accommodate tourists’ vehicles, especially those of high value, since many visitors are reluctant to park on the roadside.

Due to the persistent traffic problems, Mussoorie is reportedly losing visitors to quieter destinations. Harpreet Singh, a tourist from Jalandhar, shared his frustration, saying, “We came to relax in Mussoorie over the weekend but ended up stuck in traffic and wasting time searching for parking on Mall Road.”

Looking ahead, the under-construction Dehradun-Mussoorie Ropeway is expected to alleviate pollution and ease traffic woes by allowing tourists to park their vehicles in Dehradun and reach Mussoorie conveniently via the ropeway. Saklani expressed hope that this state-of-the-art project will bring much-needed relief to the congested hill town.
