In a significant move ahead of the 2024 general elections, Vishnu Deo Sai, a prominent tribal leader and former Union Minister, has been selected as the next Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The decision was solidified today as Sai was elected as the leader of the BJP’s legislature party, garnering support from the 54 newly-elected MLAs.
This strategic selection aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of having a tribal leader helm the state, where tribals constitute 32 percent of the population. Sai, known for his organizational prowess and a non-controversial image, emerges as a fitting choice amidst the BJP’s strong performance in the tribal areas of the state.
The BJP’s remarkable sweep in tribal-dominated regions, securing all 14 assembly seats in the Surguja area and eight out of 12 seats in Bastar, tipped the scales in favor of choosing a tribal leader for the chief ministerial role.
Vishnu Deo Sai, aged 59, carries with him a wealth of political experience. A four-term Member of Parliament, he previously presided over the Chhattisgarh unit of the party from 2020 to 2022 and has held key positions within the BJP’s National Working Committee. His proximity to former Chief Minister Raman Singh, a towering figure within the party in the state, further solidifies his standing.
Acknowledging the trust placed in him, Sai expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President J.P. Nadda, and other party leaders. He pledged to prioritize fulfilling the promises made by PM Modi through effective governance.
Addressing immediate priorities, Sai highlighted sanctioning 18 lakh houses under a housing scheme as the initial focus of his administration.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah had earlier hinted at Sai’s potential elevation during a recent poll rally in Kunkuri, urging voters to elect Sai, emphasizing that he would assume a prominent role should the BJP secure power in the state.
The BJP’s electoral success saw them secure 54 seats in the 90-member Assembly, resulting in a change of power as the Congress, which previously held 68 seats in 2018, was reduced to 35 seats in the recent polls.
The appointment of Vishnu Deo Sai stands as a strategic maneuver in line with the BJP’s vision for the state, poised to lead Chhattisgarh towards a new trajectory under his leadership.
